Lighting should not be underestimated as a compositional device. We can convey the tactile qualities of our subjects and emphasize their texture through oblique lighting.

Lighting is an important aspect of impact, as is contrastthe difference in desity between parts of an image. High contrast for example denotes larger differences with blacker blacks and whiter whites. generally, whether color or tone. Highlights, such as sunbursts or bright colors catch the eye, which responds automatically to such visual cues.

Devices we use to gain attention can work against us at times though. As already mentioned, distracting detail can make the eye jump about unintentionally and should be avoided; unfortunately, diving equipment manufacturers are rather partial to fluorescent colors and the only way to get around this is to mask those orange snorkel tips and yellow straps with black tape.

With both fish and diver portraits, the eyes are important. They should be pin sharp and leading into the point of interest rather than staring blankly at the camera.
