There are a number of different housing designs.
Capsule:
The most basic design relies entirely on
autofocus
Automatic selection of the correct focus. TTL focus systems which work through the lens are better for underwater video
/auto-exposure technique and offers only basic control, usually just a shutter release and
TTL
Through The Lens. A term applied to viewfinders and metering systems that operate behind the lens. As such TTL is accurate because it sees what the lens sees.
flash socket. Often a capsule is a stripped down, budget version of the top of range
housing
A casing or box with waterproof seals designed to contain a camera or other equipment in such a way that it can be used underwater.

Universal:
There is also a permutation of the capsule housing that takes a number of different models, sometimes called the universal housing (or Uni housing for short).
Full Function:
Most serious underwater photographers opt for housings that allow you to operate the maximum number of controls (within physical limitations).
