U/W Photo Course

Learn u/w photography the easy way!

The camera is the heart of your underwater photographic system. The basic choice is between a purpose built underwater camera or putting a (land) camera in an underwater housingA casing or box with waterproof seals designed to contain a camera or other equipment in such a way that it can be used underwater.. Each route has its advantages and disadvantages.

The camera housing is the most cost-effective way to get the latest technology underwater (and technology means a higher percentage of results). Housings are available for most popular film and digital cameras.

There are only a handful of cameras that are purpose-built especially for underwater use. Such truly amphibious cameras are compact, but mainly for 35mm film rather than digital. The classic Nikonos is the only one to have stood the test of time.

Note: The underwater camera is only part of the underwater photography equation. You also need a StrobeElectronic flash gun. and some means of attaching it to the camera efficiently (strobe arms)
