It may be helpful to think of our camera lens as a window and the shutter as rather like a curtain behind it that opens momentarily to let light onto our film. In real life if you leave the curtain open too long the Sun can fade your carpet (but if you never open the curtains you won't be able to show off your carpet to the neighbors!).
