When the light source is behind the subject the maximum contrastthe difference in desity between parts of an image. High contrast for example denotes larger differences with blacker blacks and whiter whites. is exhibited, and the most dramatic results produced. Shooting against the light is therefore a popular treatment in underwater photography, but one that causes many problems, especially difficulty in focusing.

The inclusion of a sunburstOptical phenomenon of distinct light rays observed underwater whilst looking up at the surface when the sun is out. A calm surface accentuates this effect. will lift any picture, but it must be stressed that caution is required with
