There are two main systems available for automatic control of flash exposure underwater, either remote sensor or TTLThrough The Lens. A term applied to viewfinders and metering systems that operate behind the lens. As such TTL is accurate because it sees what the lens sees..

Both systems operate in a similar manner in that each limits the duration of flash discharge (within milliseconds of when the subject has had sufficient exposure). Both systems also have similar drawbacks. They assume a scene of average tonal distribution and are therefore subject to exposure errors due to non-typical subjects.
