Best UK Dive Sites
- Scapa Flow: The second largest concentration of sunken naval shipping In
the world. The majority of wrecks are at a depth where only fast films (1000
ASA+) or time exposures are successful.
- St Abbs: The top UK shore site? Every eco system In the UK is
represented here, with some species, such as the very photogenic wolf-fish,
which are usually found in the arctic. Hosts an annual on-the-day photo
competition, August Bank Holiday.
- The Farnes: You need a boat, but seal shots are practically guaranteed.
- Amble: A dull site in itself, but was home of Freddy the Dolphin. From
here down the whole of the East coast around to Dorset on the South coast is not
frequented by underwater photographers, although that is not to say that it
isnt possible to take pictures here.
- Stoney Cove: All manner of deliberately sunken objects at this
freshwater site.
- Gildenburgh Water: Another freshwater site. The pike are to be found
around the edges!
- Swanage Pier: The home of British underwater photography? Famous for
cute Tompot blenny shots. Very atmospheric for wide angle when the sun breaks
through the boardwalk.
- Chesil Beach: Many shore sites, some wrecks. It was here that the large
jellyfish Rhisostoma pulmo were photographed In numbers.
- Plymouth: The legendary rock pool is here. Although considered dull by
most divers, a firm favourite with the photographers, especially at the annual
splash-in event staged by the British Society of Underwater photographers.
Wrecks (especially the James Egan Layne) and basking sharks are to be
shot further out.
- Scilly Isles: Pricey to get out there, but loads of seals and many
warmer water species.
- Lundy: Fabulous macro and wide angle.
- Gower peninsula: Some shallow wrecks and plenty of wildlife
- Western Ireland. Seals, dolphins, you name it, they have all been
photographed here.
- Isle of Man:
Now hosts an annual splash-in competition.
- Rathlin Island: Superb wall diving.
- Oban: Some shore sites, but more usually associated with boat diving.
The gateway to the Hebrides.
- St Kilda: Superb scenic diving with caves and tunnels. The water is
blue!
